The Mediterranean’s Changing Role in Product Trade

From our company archive. Market commentary reflects its original publication date.

The Mediterranean is increasingly becoming more than a destination market for refined products.

It is becoming a pivot point.

Changes in refinery economics, geopolitical risk, freight, sanctions and traditional trade flows are forcing physical traders to think differently about how product moves between the Black Sea, Mediterranean, Middle East and Africa.

For middle distillates in particular, geography is becoming increasingly important.

A cargo positioned in the Mediterranean can potentially address demand across Southern Europe, North Africa and parts of the Eastern Mediterranean. Supply originating further east must increasingly be evaluated not only against the underlying product benchmark, but against freight, routing risk and the value of having optionality closer to the consuming market.

This changes the commercial equation.

The cheapest barrel at origin is not necessarily the most competitive barrel at destination.

We believe the companies that will navigate this market most effectively will be those able to connect multiple supply regions with multiple demand centres rather than relying on a single traditional trade flow.

That is particularly relevant to Drakensberg Energy.

Our international strategy is deliberately being developed around interconnected trading corridors across Europe, the Mediterranean, Black Sea, Middle East, Africa and Asia.

The objective is not geographic expansion for its own sake.

It is optionality.

When markets move quickly, having more than one potential source, route or destination can become a significant commercial advantage.

Energy trade flows are changing.

The map matters again.
