VLSFO & Marine Fuels
Very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) and heavy fuel oil (HFO) for the marine fuel market.
Product Overview
VLSFO is a marine fuel category with sulphur content of no more than 0.50% by mass. Products can differ significantly in viscosity, density and blend composition. HFO covers heavier fuel-oil grades used in suitably equipped vessels and other approved applications.
Grades & Specification
ISO 8217:2024 is the current marine-fuel specification reference used here. Individual grades define their own limits; VLSFO is not one fixed viscosity grade.
| Characteristic | Reference Basis | Product Relevance |
|---|---|---|
| VLSFO Sulphur | 0.50% by mass maximum | This is distinct from a 0.10% sulphur fuel grade. |
| Viscosity & Density | ISO grade-specific values | Relevant to fuel preparation, treatment and injection. |
| Flash Point | Applicable grade limit | A core marine-fuel safety characteristic. |
| Aluminium + Silicon | Specified catalytic-fines limit | These particles can contribute to abrasive wear. |
| Sediment & Stability | Applicable test limits | Stability and compatibility are distinct fuel considerations. |
| Water & Contaminants | Grade-specific limits | Fuel quality includes water, metals and other contaminants. |
Reference information for marine fuel grades. Vessel suitability, operating-area requirements and the full contracted specification remain product-specific.
Stability and Compatibility Matter
A fuel can be stable on its own yet incompatible with another fuel in the same tank. Sulphur content alone does not describe VLSFO quality; viscosity, sediment and catalytic fines are also important to its marine application.
