OPEC+ Shocks Markets with Major Supply Increase, Driving Oil Prices Down
In a surprising turn of events, the OPEC+ alliance, traditionally a supporter of high oil prices, announced a significant increase in oil supply during a recent video conference. Instead of merely reminding member countries to adhere to output limits, the coalition, led by Saudi Arabia and Russia, decided to triple the planned production increase for May, aiming to punish members like Kazakhstan and Iraq for exceeding their quotas.
Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman expressed frustration over ongoing overproduction, particularly from Kazakhstan and Iraq, which prompted the drastic decision. The unexpected output increase of 411,000 barrels a day further exacerbated an already volatile market, caused by recent trade tariffs imposed by the U.S. President. As a result, Brent crude futures plummeted by 7.3%, marking the steepest decline in two years, dropping below $70 a barrel.
This abrupt shift highlights the growing tensions within the OPEC+ alliance as it struggles to balance global oil markets for an extended period. Observers noted that this strategy resembles the price war experienced during the 2020 pandemic. The announcement was strategically timed, suggesting an intent to maximize its bearish impact on the market.
Kazakhstan’s aggressive output increase at its Tengiz oil field, despite pledges to adhere to OPEC+ limits, has further strained relations with Riyadh. Meanwhile, Iraq has improved its compliance but has yet to fulfill promises to compensate for prior overproduction. The decision to raise supply reflects a concerted effort by Saudi Arabia and Russia to encourage better compliance from non-compliant members while navigating the complexities of the global oil landscape.
