Beyond Price in Refined Products Trading

From our company archive. Market commentary reflects its original publication date.

Over the last few weeks I’ve had a number of conversations where the focus has been almost entirely on price.

Of course price matters. It always will.

But in today’s market, it’s no longer the biggest differentiator.

What’s becoming increasingly clear is that refined products are telling a very different story to crude. Diesel and jet fuel fundamentals remain tight in many regions, refinery margins have strengthened and logistics continue to be influenced by geopolitical events and refinery disruptions. Simply looking at the crude price no longer tells the full story. (IEA)

For buyers, that means one thing.

The cheapest offer on paper is not necessarily the most competitive transaction once execution risk is taken into account.

Availability, logistics, vessel scheduling, documentation, inspection, banking arrangements and the credibility of your counterparty have become just as important as the headline number.

In physical trading, certainty has value.

It’s a reminder that successful transactions are built on preparation, transparency and the ability to execute when market conditions change.

Those fundamentals haven’t changed, and I don’t believe they ever will.
